Nineteenth-century photography became a tool for fixing reality. The focus of this study is the late nineteenth—early twentieth-century portrait, which reveals the social boundaries of the era. Through the collision of formal portraiture, crime photography, and scientific imaging, the book explores how perceptions of humanity were formed. It creates a new space for dialogue with the archive, allowing historical images to meet and communicate, thus offering a re-examination of their meaning today.
